 Winter 2011

Sweeney Todd

The 3rd & final production of our tenth year will be 'The Corn is Green' by Emlyn Williams. Directed by Karen Claridge & will be performed from Thurs 21st - Sat 23rd June 2012.

Our summer production is Emlyn Williams' classic semi autobiographical story ‘The Corn is Green’, set in a poverty stricken Welsh mining village at the turn of the century, concerning one man`s struggle to transcend his circumstances. It is about the arrival in the village of an English, strong willed, spinster school teacher who is determined to win over the villagers and bring education to them, despite their objections, causing complications in the process. She announces her intention to teach miners how to read and write, and guides one pupil, a truly gifted and intuitive writer within whom she detects a great man, towards a scholarship to Oxford. The play is about the story of the difficulties Morgan faces as he battles to succeed and make his way in the world despite his lowly background.

The message of the play is that anyone, from no matter how lowly their background, can find a voice and make their mark in the world if they find inspiration in something or someone that  triggers their capacity to learn and flourish.

This is a classic Welsh play of insight and inspiration, that mixes a strong, serious and dramatic theme with a good deal of wit and humour along with way.
